Madam Dzimbiri visit EDC

The Special Advisor of Women Affairs in the office of the Vice-President, madam Patricia Shanil Muluzi has described the SMEDI Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) at Mponela as a perfect haven for women economic empowerment. Madam Dzimbiri made the remarks when she toured the Centre on Thursday, 18th March, 2021 .

What is the EDC?

The Entrepreneurship Development Centre (EDC) is a training arm of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute. It is located at Mponela in Dowa district. Within its campus there are classrooms, a library, hostels, board and lodge, conference facilities and an Administration block all positioned to deliver the best entrepreneurial education. Besides these facilities, the Centre has an incubation facility, with state art of the machinery that is used to process tomato puri, mango juice, cassava flour, briquettes and gemstone polishing. The incubation Centre thus provides hands on training for those in need of value addition training. Furthermore in 2019 SMEDI management erected green houses as learning demonstration plots for those interested in agri-business.

The Special Advisor of women affairs in the Office Vice President said she is impressed with the work that is being done at Mponela. She promised to report the impressive work to higher authorities so that the facility is utilized more by women. She personally felt more women could learn about waste management and agri-processing at the Centre. “I didn’t know we have such a training Centre in Malawi. Touring this Centre made me feel like I am in another country” she said.

Speaking to this reporter, Mr. Ellias Kanongola, The Acting Head of Programs spoke of his delight at the visitation of such a high public officer.” We at EDC are very happy with her visit. Whenever we are visited by senior public figures like her we feel very honoured. On our part we are encouraged with her compliments and this will give us courage to do more. Going forward we plan to continue engaging her so that we form a mutually beneficial working relationship with her office and other relevant stakeholders”
