SMEDI Links Buyers and Sellers in Mzuzu
06 Jun 2017

MSMEs are believed to be the backbone of economic growth in Malawi and countries beyond. However, not much has been done to help link these MSMEs who require potential buyers to grow their businesses. It is against this background that prompted SMEDI to organize and successfully facilitate an interface meeting between Buyers and MSMEs under the theme, “Market Linkage the answer to MSMEs growth”. The meeting took place on Tuesday 6th June, 2017, at Illala Cresta Lodge in Mzuzu and was graced by Mr. Edward Chilima, the Director of Business Information and Training for SMEDI.

The Interface meeting attracted both MSMEs and Buyers from the Northern Region. The Buyers among others included; Peoples Trading Company, Illala Crest Lodge, Mzuzu University and Mzuzu Government Secondary School.

The MSMEs were given a very rare opportunity to interact with the buyers and understand their requirements as far as procurement in their respective organizations is concerned.

This was echoed by the MSMEs representative, Ms.  Marlyn Munthali who thanked SMEDI for organizing the meeting and that it allowed the MSMEs gain a lot of information that the buyers need that will help them work towards a win-win working relationship between the buyers and sellers. She added that the meeting allowed the MSMEs to network. She continued to say, ‘the buyers need to specify the quality of products they want so that the MSMEs ably supply accordingly rather than just blaming them for supplying low quality goods”.

In his speech, Mr. Chilima assured MSMEs that SMEDI will continue to facilitate the market linkages and emphasized that SMEDI will walk the talk as far as development of MSMEs is concerned. He was impressed with the MSMEs in waste management and promised them to be included in the forth coming Incubation project at SMEDI’s Enterprise Development Center in Mponela as it has the very same focus.

The interface meeting proved to be a success as MSMEs not only were they offered a rare platform to network with fellow MSMEs but also to be linked with their respective potential buyers.

SMEDI Sensitizes MSMEs on a Product Certification Scheme
23 May 2017

Agriculture is the most important sector of the Malawi economy. It employs about 80 per cent of the total workforce, contributes over 80 per cent to foreign exchange earnings, accounts for 39 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) and contributes significantly to national and household food security. (Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security 2010).  Major crops grown for commercial purposes include maize, rice, groundnuts, beans, soyabeans, mushrooms and many fruits and vegetables. Dairy cattle are also raised on commercial basis. However, research has shown that farmers do not get the maximum profits from the sales of their produce since most of them are sold in their raw form. This is due to a number of reasons not limited to: lack of machines for processing, lack of technical expertise to process different products, challenges in meeting the certification standards of particular products.

Small and Medium Enterprises Development Institute (SMEDI) through the Ministry of Industry Trade and Tourism under the National Export Strategy, is mandated to champion the development of MSMEs in the agro-processing sector, through value addition in order to help farmers maximize profits from the merchandise. In addition, the products that have a quality mark found on their labels improves the competitveness of the products since they can be available for purchase in many market points. Besides it guarantees quality of the product which consumers buy and protects consumer health and safety.

SMEDI over the years has observed that many MSMEs involve the MBS at a very later stage where the bureau has to audit the samples for product conformity assessment and auditing the process for compliance with mandatory Malawi Standards. In many cases, the MSMEs fail the audit since production was initiated without the knowledge of the standards to conform to. In addition, the infrastructures are also faulted as many of them have not been constructed according to the standard.

It is against this back ground that SMEDI embarked on a regional exercise where it sensitized the MSMEs through their cooperatives on the importance of having their products certified and the basics towards the MBS certification process. The districts reached include, Dedza, Salima, Mchinji, Mwanza, Blantyre, Mzuzu and Nkhatabay. This process is a conformity assessment procedure by which the MBS, through the Quality Assurance Services Department, gives a written assurance or a quality mark that a product, service or process conforms to specified requirements.  SMEDI in collaboration with the cooperatives identified, will facilitate the certification process by ensuring that the cooperatives are aware of the specific product standard e.g edible oils standard, MS 21 (food and personal hygiene standard) and MS 19 (packaging and labelling standard). On the other hand, SMEDI will be linking with MBS to follow up on the bureau’s surveillance visits to the factories and ensuring minimum delays are made.

The sensitization meetings are a step towards the Buy Malawi Strategy campaign which aims at promoting the buying of Malawian products. This will ensure the production of quality Malawian products which will be competitive on both domestic and international markets thereby increasing the revenue base of MSMEs.
